In the world of make believe Where good reigns over evil I watched my son play soldier Fighting villains and crime
I remember every time he would take a stand All those bad guys never had a chance With a salute, and a smile he'd say to me Mom when I get older and grow up really tall, I want to be a soldier most of all I prayed
Lord, I kissed my son goodbye today I couldn't let him see me cry He thought I had something in my eye He looked so strong and brave As he climbed up on the school bus He turned back to look at us With a salute, a smile, then a wave Oh please don't let him be afraid
My son's all grown up now There is no more make believe Life and all it brings is far too real He's learned the price of peace Doesn't come easily and he says he has to take a stand To help bring peace throughout our land
Lord, I kissed my son goodbye today I couldn't let him see me cry He thought I had something in my eye He looked so strong and brave As he climbed up on the bus He turned back to look at us With a salute, a smile, then a wave Oh please don't let him be afraid
Lord, I kissed my son goodbye today He's still my little soldier Keep him safe from harm And please don't let him be afraid Please, don't let him be afraid
